PARTS OF SPEECH

Children who were raised by English-speaking parents and went to school in the United States are fortunate compared to others who were not raised and educated in this country and had never learned English back home. For example, I came to this country when I was young. I have never learned English before I came here. When I saw a cup, I did not know what it is called in English. When I saw a fork, I did not know what it is called in English. When I heard people say the word “dirt”, I did not know what dirt looks like. Learning a new language, like English, was not easy. I spent hours in the children's library looking for books, looking for pictures of common objects, and learning what they are called in English. That was just the beginning of my journey to learn English so I can understand what people say and what I read. I was really lucky because my English teacher in high school, a female, cares a lot about teaching me English grammar, constructing English sentences that make sense, and learning parts of the speech and how to apply them in writing a sentence.

What is a noun, what is a verb, what is an adjective, and so forth? I find that parts of speech are important to know, especially when I read the Bible. Many people who read the Bible, in their rush to do something else, don’t pay any attention to the parts of speech. As I have repeatedly said in the past, the Bible is a law book. Reading a law book is not the same as reading a novel or a comic book. We have to pay close attention to the parts of speech of a sentence or parts of speech of a paragraph that we read, including the commas and periods. Sometimes we overlook a verb and misinterpret it as a noun, or as something else, other than a verb. And when we do that we can get confused. And the confusion can spread to other people, hundreds, thousands, or even worldwide. That’s one of the main reasons why there are over 45,000 Christian denominations or groups globally. They are all confused. They should not be if they follow Jesus only!

Jesus said in John 10:14, "I am the good shepherd; and I know My [sheep], and am known by My own.” In John 10:27 Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Do we hear His voice? NO, we hear the voice of an Apostle. Are we following Him? NO, we are following the Apostle. So then, if we don’t hear the voice of Jesus, and we are not following Him, then the Apostle is our shepherd, and not Jesus. Agree? Who is going to save us when Jesus returns at the end of time, the Apostle, or Jesus? Remember, Jesus said that many are called but few are chosen. Matthew 22:14 says "For many are called, but few [are] chosen." Jesus also warned us of the following, "For false Christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.” Matthew 24:24. Do you think you are the “very elect”? Then this warning is for you.

Now, back to the parts of speech. And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What is your reading [of it]?" So he answered and said, "`You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,' and `your neighbor as yourself.'" And Jesus said to him, "You have answered rightly; do this and you will live." And He said to him, "You have answered rightly; do this and you will live. Luke 10:25-28

James 2:21-26 tells us, “But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works, faith was made perfect? We know that faith alone is imperfect, therefore faith cannot save us.

Note, that the word “do”  implies “work”. And the word “work” includes FAITH! Abraham would have never sacrificed his son, Isaac if he has no faith in God. The fact that Abraham is willing to sacrifice his son shows that he has faith in God. When Martin Luther was talking about faith and work he did not understand that work includes faith.

I would have never worked for my employer if I have no faith in him that he would pay me at the end of the pay period. And my boss would have never paid my wages if I have never worked for him. Why did my boss pay my wages, because I have faith in him, or because I have worked for him? Why do you think God wants to save us? Because of what we do for Him, or was it because of our hairstyle? Do we understand why Jesus said to the lawyer do this and you will live? He wants us to work.
