DID JESUS DIE TO REDEEM MY SIN?
My Protestant school teacher told me in school when I was young that Jesus had died to redeem my sin. I have never thought much about what he said because I wasn’t interested in his class - religion. But sixty years later I became very much interested to learn more about Jesus because of an unusual personal experience that I had experienced. It was then that I began to earnestly read the Bible and try to make sense of what I read, particularly the writings of Paul. Paul was a lawyer, and I am not. I have difficulty understanding what he wrote. And so, I read mainly parts of the Bible that were spoken by Jesus, or written by His disciples other than Paul.
One text that greatly interests me was found in Matthew 5:23-24, "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First, be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” In other words, Jesus wants us to reconcile and make peace with a brother or sister whom we have offended. In other words, Jesus won’t hear our prayer, or accept our offer unless we have reconciled or made peace with our brother and sister whom we have offended.
For example, when I was working as a Physician Assistant in Ontario, California, years ago, there was a medical assistant who wanted to have an affair with me. I kept politely resisting.
Thank God I did not fall to her persistent temptation. If I did, I would have to reconcile with my wife and my children and make peace with my wife. And not only that, I would have to tell the medical assistant to go home and leave.
Matthew 5:23-24 tells me that I have to redeem my own sin. Jesus will not do it for me.
I have not found a verse in the Bible where Jesus said that He died to redeem my sin.
Jesus said in John 7:7, "The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.” Jesus said the world hates Him. The world doesn't love Him because the world is evil.
Revelation 20:12 said, “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is [the Book] of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.”
Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. "Many will say to Me in that day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' "And then I will declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'”
Note that both the living and the dead will be judged according to their works, and not according to their faith.
Thank you Jesus for saving me from the evil medical assistant.
