A NEW COMMANDMENT
This morning I want to discuss with my readers about a new commandment that Jesus gave to us in John 13:34. "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” My grandson works for a Pentecostal church in Indonesia. He believes that the new “love” law of Jesus replaces all the previous commandments that God gave to the prophet Moses on Mount Sinai many centuries ago. I have no clue who taught him about Jesus' new commandment in John 13:34 that replaces all of the old commandments. I asked myself if it is true that the new commandment of Jesus replaces the old commandment that says, for example, “You shall have no other gods before Me”, Exodus 20:3, how can it make sense? Why? Because loving one another is not the same as worshiping or idolizing the apostle Paul, and betraying Jesus, the Jesus whom we say has died to pay for our sins. It just doesn’t make any sense at all! The new commandment of Jesus replaces no commandment that God gave to us through Moses, not one! The new commandment of Jesus is an addition to the old law of Moses. It replaces nothing. In His new commandment Jesus wants us to love one another as He has loved us. I think some of us misunderstood His love for us. God is love. Jesus is love. And so, we might say what’s wrong with loving a man, or loving a woman whose interest in us is nothing but sex, entertainment, money, and no marriage? Is that not a sin? Some Christians say it doesn't matter. We can live in sin under grace because God is love. We can live in sin under grace because Jesus is love.
Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. "Many will say to Me on that day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' "And then I will declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'” Matthew 7:21-23.
Jesus rejected these men/women of great faith because they did not do the will of Jesus’ Father. Do we know who Jesus’ Father is? If we say we do, have we done His will? If we say we have not, what are we waiting for? Are we waiting until Jesus returns and hear Him say to us, “depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness”.
