FATHER, FORGIVE THEM
The disciples of Jesus asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. In Matthew 6:9 Jesus taught them this,
"In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”
Whom was Jesus referring to as Our Father in heaven. He was not referring to Himself because he was still on earth, and not in heaven. He was born as a human being, just like you and me, and not born as an angel or a Spirit. He was referring to His Father in heaven. And He was referring to our Father in heaven, and not to Himself. He was referring to the disciples' Father in heaven. He was referring to our Father in heaven. And that makes Jesus our brother.
As our brother, He cannot forgive our sins. Only God the Father can forgive our sins. Jesus was only a mediator between His Father and us.
And that was why while Jesus was dying on the cross, He prayed to our Father in heaven and said, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.” Luke 23:34.
Now, more on the Lord’s prayer next. “Your kingdom comes. Your will be done on earth as [it is] in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:10-13.
Readers, before I go any further, I want to ask you this very important question. Do you know why “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors" is included in our prayer? If we don’t forgive others, our Father in heaven will also not forgive us of our sins.
Readers, do we have past sins that Jesus’ Father has not forgiven us? If we have, repent and ask Him now to forgive us. Or do we still hold others for the pain that they have caused us?
Forgive them, don’t make it difficult for them to receive God’s forgiveness.
